Pausing under pressure: emerging evidence from a leadership team study on how to sustain performance
Tue 29 Sept
|Zoom session
Drawing on a four-month study of a leadership team in a large design agency, this session explores how introducing deliberate micro-pauses can help teams avoid autopilot under pressure, improve decision-making, and sustain performance across the wider organisation.

About the event
Under pressure, teams can drift into autopilot. They react faster, listen less, and repeat patterns that can cost them in rushed decisions, unheard voices, rework and inefficiency. My doctoral research examines a simple approach to counter this issue: the 'micro-pause', a small, deliberate stop that lets a team interrupt the drift, realign on what matters, and carry on more clearly.
This study follows the leadership team of a large design agency over four months as they try to build this approach into how they work. I'll share the evidence so far: why teams slip into autopilot when the stakes rise, and the conditions that helped pausing take root for this team. I'll cover what shifted for them and what that meant beyond the leadership team itself, for their business and how their new ways of working started to shape the teams reporting into them.
